It came down to just a single vote.
After one of the closest contests in this year’s Best in the New England, the Great Central Hotel in Glen Innes has snatched the title of Best Pub or Club from reigning champion The Bolt Inn, winning by the narrowest possible margin.
The dramatic result denies The Bolt Inn the chance of back-to-back doubles after claiming both Best Restaurant and Best Pub in 2025. While The Bolt Inn successfully defended its Best Restaurant crown this year, the coveted pub title has crossed town to the Great Central Hotel after a nail-biting finish.
Supporters said the winning formula was a combination of exceptional food, genuine country hospitality and a welcoming atmosphere that keeps both locals and visitors coming back.
“Best food and vibe,” Hailey said simply, while Ryan described it as having “best food, great staff and general great vibes.”
For many voters, it was the atmosphere that made the difference.
Kate said the hotel offered “great food, great atmosphere, welcoming to all and fantastic people,” while Mel summed it up as simply having “great food, great atmosphere.”
Others pointed to the consistency of the dining experience.
“Exceptional service, meals and atmosphere,” Jo wrote, also praising the venue’s support of local Topper’s Mountain Wines.
Geoff said the hotel stood out because it had “a couple of chefs that are very talented,” with a menu that changes regularly while keeping prices reasonable, adding that management and staff were always friendly and helpful.
Hospitality was another recurring theme.
“The owners and staff are the most wonderful friendly people. They go out of their way to make sure everything is 100 per cent. The food is always spot on,” Stephen said.
Audrey agreed, saying owners Drew and Suga and their team “go over and beyond to their customers to provide the best service in Glen Innes.”
For Ronnie, the hotel’s commitment to the community helped separate it from the competition.
“This pub is dedicated to community, huge supporters of local causes, local live music scene and deliver consistently great food and service,” Ronnie said. “Walking into The Great Central Hotel feels like an extension of home, warm, friendly and very comfy.”
The venue’s reputation as a live music destination also featured prominently, with Tim pointing to its annual Australian Celtic Festival after-party as one of the town’s signature events.
“They are known for live music and especially the Sunday night of the Australian Celtic Festival where they hold the after party and it’s standing room only,” Tim said.
Di credited the success to both the kitchen and front-of-house teams.
“The Great Central boasts exceptional cuisine thanks to Chef Drew and his team. The front of house, led by Danielle and her courteous staff, is undoubtedly the heartbeat of the hotel’s vibrant atmosphere.”
Others kept it simple.
“Fantastic food, wonderful service and overall a great experience,” Lily said.
