When people hear Kentucky, they might think of bourbon. But in the New England, Kentucky is home to an award-winning distillery that’s proving other spirits can be just as memorable.
Dobson’s Distillery has been crowned Best Winery, Brewery or Distillery in this year’s Best in the New England awards, emerging as the clear winner after a spirited contest with Armidale’s Welder’s Dog, which held the lead at one stage before Dobson’s surged home during the final stages of voting.
The family-run distillery has built a devoted following through its distinctive handcrafted spirits, creative approach and welcoming cellar door, with customers praising not only the products but also the people behind them.
Jordan summed it up simply: “Amazing gin, wonderful people.”
Others said Dobson’s has become much more than a distillery.
Alissa described it as a place where “the heart of the New England” meets tourism and storytelling, saying Stephen and Lyn Dobson have built the business through word of mouth, creativity and award-winning spirits.
She said the distillery had attracted visitors from far and wide, while Stephen’s distinctive artwork had also become part of the region’s identity through commissioned works displayed in Uralla.
Many voters highlighted the quality and originality of the products.
Berdine singled out the Sweet Pea Gin as making “the best cocktails”, while naming the Cinnamon Whiskey Liqueur as a personal favourite. She added that her whisky-loving brother overseas also rated Dobson’s whisky highly.
Crystal kept it simple, nominating the business for its “fabulous gin”.
Beyond the spirits themselves, voters said it was the atmosphere and community involvement that made Dobson’s stand out.
Sophie described the team as “beautiful staff” who had created an experience unlike anything else in the New England.
“They have a wonderful atmosphere that is so unlike anything else in the New England,” she said. “Their food and distillery products are award winning and amazing to say the least.”
Berdine also praised Stephen and Lyn for supporting community events and collaborating with other local businesses, saying they were always eager to contribute to the region.
From award-winning gin, whisky, rum and more, to art, hospitality and community spirit, Dobson’s Distillery has carved out a unique place in the New England tourism landscape. This small Kentucky distillery has become one of the region’s standout destinations—and one that’s putting New England spirits firmly on the map.
