A major community event will return to Gunnedah later this month, as hundreds of people with disability expected to take part in the annual Challenge Community Services Swimming Carnival.

The event, now in its 22nd year, will be held at Gunnedah Memorial Pool on Thursday 30 April, bringing together people with a disability over 16 as participants, as well as their carers and support workers from across regional NSW.

More than 250 people are expected to attend this year, including 138 participants travelling from 16 different towns, with one competitor making the journey from Tenterfield.

The carnival will run from 9am to 4pm, with a full day of activities planned both in and around the pool. The morning session will feature novelty events such as egg and spoon races, kickboard races and walking races, before competitive swimming events including 25m and 50m races take place in the afternoon. Presentations will be held at the conclusion of each session.

Organisers say the mix of events is designed to cater to a wide range of abilities, ensuring participants can take part in a way that suits them while enjoying the atmosphere of the day.

Acting CEO and Executive Director Community Services at Challenge Community Services, Julie May, said the event remains an important fixture for those involved.

“We’re proud to create a safe, welcoming space where people with disability and their families can come together to compete, participate or simply enjoy being part of the day,” she said.

“Events like this support social connection, confidence, physical activity and life skills around water, while celebrating people exactly as they are.”

The event is free to attend, with a barbecue lunch provided for participants, supported by event sponsor Whitehaven Coal.

Challenge is also calling for support from individuals to support the event by donating online.
