Inverell man charged after alleged firearm threats

A 21-year-old Inverell man has been charged after allegedly threatening two residents with a firearm earlier this year.

Police were called to Flinders Place, Inverell, about 1.10am on Sunday, 11 January, following reports of a man with a firearm.

Officers were told a man had threatened a man in his 50s and a woman in her 30s with a pistol before leaving the scene prior to their arrival.

Inquiries into the incident were commenced by officers from New England Police District.

About 9.30am on Sunday, 19 April, police received further reports of a man wearing a balaclava near Macintyre Street.

Following a search of the area, officers arrested a 21-year-old man, allegedly after he failed to comply with a police direction. He was taken to Inverell Police Station.

During the arrest, police allegedly located and seized a small pistol and two live .22 calibre rounds from the man’s pockets.

He was charged with:

  • possess unauthorised pistol
  • use offensive weapon with intent to commit indictable offence
  • enter building/land with firearm or imitation firearm
  • possess unregistered unauthorised pistol in a public place
  • possess ammunition without a licence or permit
  • fail to comply with a direction of a police officer
  • stalk/intimidate with intent to cause fear of physical harm (domestic)
  • disguise face with intent to commit an indictable offence

The man was refused bail and appeared before Bail Division Court 5 on Monday, 20 April, where he was formally refused bail. He is due to appear before Inverell Local Court on Thursday, 23 April.
