Dogs and their owners across the New England North West are gearing up for the return of Gala Day for Dogs, a free, family-friendly celebration of dogs, responsible pet ownership and community, set to be held at Bicentennial Park on Sunday, 27 September.
The event will bring together pet-related market stalls, live entertainment, a jumping castle and activities for both two and four-legged visitors, alongside an agility course where dogs can try their paws with the guidance of local trainers and behaviourists.
New additions to this year’s event include pet portraits and photography, a free temporary tattoo stand, and the chance to meet representatives from pet nutrition brands Lifewise Pet Nutrition and Purina.
“Gala Day for Dogs is back at Bicentennial Park with a free, family-friendly celebration of dogs, responsible pet ownership and the local community,” a Tamworth Regional Council spokesperson said.
Two live demonstrations will headline the day’s program. The Tamworth Agility Group, a branch of Dog Sport New England and affiliated with the Australian Dog Agility Association, will run an Agility Demonstration from 9am to 10am. What A Nose! Canine Scent Work will follow with a Canine Scent Work Demonstration and Gala Games from 10.30am to 11.20am.
“The agility and scent work demonstrations showcase the incredible ways dogs and handlers can work together, from building trust and confidence to tapping into a dog’s natural instincts,” the spokesperson said. “They’re not just for competitive handlers either, with plenty of simple training and enrichment ideas that everyday dog owners can take home and try with their own pets.”
The day’s competitions give everyday dogs and owners a chance to celebrate their bond without needing pedigree papers or perfect training. Categories include Golden Oldie for senior dogs aged seven and over at 10am, Junior Handler for competitors under 12 at 10.15am, Tiny But Mighty for small dogs at 11.30am, and Gentle Giant for large dogs at 11.45am.
A dual event combining One of a Kind and Rescue Rockstar will run at midday, followed by Skilled Handler and Best Trick for handlers aged 12 and over at 12.15pm, and Fur Fashionista, the best dressed and costume category, at 12.30pm.
“Categories like Fur Fashionista have even been inspired by Gala Day attendees, ensuring there’s a fun way for dogs of all kinds to have their moment in the spotlight,” the spokesperson said.
Winners across the categories will take home prizes thanks to the event’s sponsors.
The day will also include a sizzling BBQ fundraiser, with proceeds supporting the local Animal Welfare League, and a Toy Drive collecting donations for dogs still waiting for their forever homes at Paws For Life Animal Shelter and the Companion Animal Centre.
“The Toy Drive is a way to extend the spirit of Gala Day to dogs still waiting for their forever homes, helping Paws For Life Animal Shelter and the Companion Animal Centre provide enrichment and comfort while they’re in care,” the spokesperson said. “We’re encouraging community members to donate clean, new or gently loved toys, particularly durable rubber, chew and enrichment toys, with no tennis balls needed.”
All dogs must remain on lead throughout the event, and owners are responsible for cleaning up after their pets.
“Gala Day is a relaxed, welcoming event and a fantastic day out for the whole family,” the spokesperson said. “Whether you’re bringing a dog or simply coming along to enjoy the activities, demonstrations and stalls, our top tips are to arrive early, take your time and make a morning of it. If your dog is joining you, let them experience the day at their own pace and follow their lead, with plenty of space available if they need a quiet break. Most importantly, relax, enjoy the atmosphere and make the most of everything the day has to offer.”
