Inverell Shire families have until the end of November to have their say on new rules for memorials, flowers, and trinkets in Council’s cemeteries.
Inverell Shire Council endorsed the Draft Cemetery Monuments, Flowers and Trinkets Policy for community consultation at its Ordinary meeting on Wednesday, 28 October.
The draft policy has been developed to guide the installation and alteration of memorials and the management of Council’s cemeteries.
It sets out a documented and consistent framework for assessing memorial applications, and for managing flowers, trinkets, ornaments, plants, and other items placed in cemetery grounds.
Mayor Kate Dight said the proposed policy aimed to balance the needs of bereaved families with Council’s responsibility to keep cemeteries safe, respectful, accessible, and well maintained.
“Cemeteries are important places of remembrance and reflection,” Dight said.
“This draft policy provides clearer guidance for families, monumental masons and funeral industry representatives while helping Council manage safety, maintenance, access and amenity consistently across our cemeteries.”
Written submissions close at 4.30pm on Friday, 27 November, and can be made:
- by post, addressed to the General Manager, Inverell Shire Council, PO Box 138, Inverell NSW 2360
- by email to council@inverell.nsw.gov.au
- online through the Inverell Shire Council website.
The draft policy can be read on Council’s website, www.inverell.nsw.gov.au, or at Council’s Administration Building, 144 Otho Street, Inverell.
