The New England is home to some of Australia’s most celebrated cultural institutions, from major regional galleries to nationally recognised museums. But in the proud tradition of the Best in the New England, it’s often the smaller attractions with fiercely loyal local support that come out on top.
So this year, the likes of NERAM and BAMM will have to step aside, with the Tenterfield Railway Museum taking out the title of Best Museum or Gallery.
The volunteer-run museum, housed in the historic Tenterfield Railway Station, attracted strong support from voters who praised its remarkable restoration work, hands-on exhibits and passionate team of volunteers dedicated to preserving an important part of the region’s history.
Many voters said the volunteers were the heart of the museum.
“Great volunteers. It’s a place kids love to visit and be hands-on with trains. Their eyes light up,” Jude said.
Coral said the volunteers’ knowledge and commitment made every visit memorable.
“They know the history and the stories and are always happy to keep the museum open, even on very freezing winter days. The community also benefits from their markets,” she said.
Others highlighted the enormous amount of work that has gone into restoring the collection.
“Recognition for the hours and hours volunteers have spent restoring and maintaining the history of the railway in NSW,” Todd said.
Jennifer described the museum as “a wonderful museum, well maintained and extensive”, adding that her grandchildren “absolutely love going there every time they visit.”
Several voters said the interactive displays helped bring history to life.
“There are many exhibits that can be climbed into and sat in,” Juanita said. “Primary school students love learning the history because they can hop into various carriages and vehicles. There are so many interesting displays and the volunteers are very helpful.”
Lexie said the museum’s hands-on approach made it especially popular with families.
“It’s totally run by volunteers who restore and maintain all the carriages and exhibits. It’s great for children because it’s hands-on with activities to do. The gardens are beautiful and the volunteers are knowledgeable and friendly.”
Steve praised the museum’s “huge display” and wealth of local history, while Colin described it as a “sensational collection of railway memorabilia from a bygone era.”
In a region blessed with outstanding museums and galleries, this year’s result is another reminder that passion, community spirit and thousands of volunteer hours can still see a small local attraction take the win.
The museum team said they were humbled by the recognition.
“Thank you so much to everyone who voted for the Tenterfield Railway Station Museum,” they said.
“Such an honour and privilege given the high standard of museums and galleries in the New England.
“The team at the museum will ensure that we continue to be simply the best.”
