Dead heat: Boobooks and Reader’s Companion share Best Book Store crown

For the first time in Best in the New England history, the Best Book Store category has finished in a dead heat, with Armidale favourites Boobooks and Reader’s Companion unable to be separated by voters.

The result means Reader’s Companion successfully retains a share of the title it won outright last year, while Boobooks joins the winners’ list after earning enough community support to force a tie.

Although both businesses sell books, voters made it clear each offers something distinctive, with Reader’s Companion celebrated for its personalised service and literary expertise, while Boobooks was praised as a vibrant community hub where books, coffee, conversation and culture come together.

Supporters of Reader’s Companion repeatedly highlighted the passion and knowledge of owners Michelle and Roy and their team.

Helen said the store offered “a huge variety of books for all ages” and was always willing to order in special titles, while providing expert recommendations.

Fi said the team went “out of their way” to match every customer with the right book, while also recognising Michelle’s contribution to revitalising Confetti Lane.

“Their online ordering is fabulous,” Fi added.

Francesca described Reader’s Companion as “an extraordinary place of wonder.”

“It’s quite simply the very best bookshop in the world,” she said.

“The range of books, cards, papers, games and ephemera is an Aladdin’s cave of magic.”

Sophie praised the constantly changing selection, knowledgeable staff and thoughtful recommendations, while Jack said the welcoming premises, intelligent staff and easy ordering process for hard-to-find titles made it “simply the nicest bookshop north of Hobart.”

Boobooks attracted equally enthusiastic support, with many voters saying it had become far more than a place to buy books.

Hannah described it as having “a wonderful atmosphere and a vibrant community.”

“They frequently host live music and are always supporting local authors,” she said.

“They’re the best place to drink tea with friends and chat about your favourite books.”

Martin agreed, saying Boobooks was “more than a bookstore.”

“It’s a local gathering place for all sorts of interesting activities and events,” he said.

“The decor and vibe are perfectly blended to make the place an experience.”

Alisa said the business had become an important community hub, describing it as “a real community hub, café, music venue and meeting place for many groups” that played an important social role in Armidale.

Other voters praised the extensive range of new and second-hand books, excellent coffee, welcoming staff and regular community events.

Hayley said the historic building, friendly atmosphere and countless quiet corners made it the perfect place to spend hours browsing or catching up with friends, while Jan highlighted everything from homemade soup in winter and board games to author talks, book launches and comfortable indoor and outdoor spaces.

While the two businesses have different personalities, voters agreed they share one important quality: both have become treasured parts of Armidale’s cultural life.
