New era for New England Rugby as 2026 season kicks off

The New England Rugby Union (NERU) season begins this weekend, with expansion clubs and a historic debut signalling a major step forward for the competition.

Barraba Rugby Club will make its first appearance in NERU after moving from the Central North competition. The club will field teams in both First Grade and the women’s competition, adding depth and reach to the league.

NERU president Jason Wall said the addition would strengthen the competition.

“We’re excited to welcome Barraba to New England Rugby. Their addition expands our footprint and lifts the overall standard. Barraba has a strong rugby culture and we’re looking forward to seeing that on display from Round 1.”

Round 1 will also mark a milestone for the Dorrigo Rangers, with their women’s side set to play its first official match in the competition against Robb College at Bellevue Oval.

The debut highlights continued growth in women’s rugby across the region, with new teams from both Dorrigo and Barraba pushing participation to record levels.

Meanwhile, familiar favourites- Armidale Blues, Walcha Rams and Tamworth Magpies make their returns, all chasing early-season momentum.

With growing participation and increased competition across both men’s and women’s grades, the 2026 season shapes as one of NERU’s most significant yet.
