Fascinators at the ready: where to watch the Melbourne Cup in New England

Whether you study the form guide like scripture or pick your horse because it has a funny name, the Melbourne Cup is almost here, and New England has long lunches, fashion parades, and sweeps lined up from Tenterfield to Tamworth.

The race that stops a nation runs on Tuesday, 3 November. Here’s where to be when it does.

Glen Innes

Glen Innes is making a full day of it. The Can Assist Melbourne Cup Fashion Parade Fundraiser runs from 10.30am to 7pm at 49 Macquarie Street, and tickets are $35.

That gets you Melbourne Cup sweeps, morning tea, a fashion parade, a buffet lunch, live music from the Skinner Boys, a free gift bag, bubbles, and market stalls. It’s a big day out for a good cause, and you can tell your bank manager it was for charity.

Tamworth

Tamworth has three options, depending on how seriously you take your race day.

The Tudor Hotel is hosting a Melbourne Cup Long Lunch on the Rooftop from 12pm to 3pm. For $40 a head, you get a banquet-style Greek menu and a glass of sparkling on arrival while you watch the action. Sweeps will run all afternoon, with prizes for best dressed.

If you’d rather go upmarket, Melbourne Cup Courtside is on at The Pavilion, The Courts at East, from 1pm to 4pm. Expect three-course catering, a beer and Champagne package, Fashions on the Field, Cup sweeps, and live race coverage on the big screen. BERLYN will play live through the afternoon. This one is strictly 18+.

And for those who aren’t ready to go home once the horses have crossed the line, Short Notice is playing a free show at Diggers, Wests Tamworth, from 4pm to 7pm. A good place to celebrate your winnings, or quietly forget about them.

Narrabri

Club Narrabri is hosting Melbourne Cup 2026 at The Bowlo, at Narrabri Bowling Club, 176 Maitland Street, from 11.30am to 3.30pm. It’s a chance to catch up with friends and soak up the race-day atmosphere. Tickets are available through Eventbrite.

Gunnedah

Club Gunnedah is promising a bigger and better Cup Day this year.

“Last year was great, but this year is going to be even better!” the club wrote.

Tickets for Melbourne Cup 2026 at Club Gunnedah are available at reception or online at https://www.trybooking.com/au/event/1660591.

Moree

At the Amaroo Tavern, Jarred Taylor plays live from 1pm to 4pm, and entry is free. Round up your crew and dress up, because the best-dressed table wins a $200 bar voucher.

Bingara

Bingara RSL opens its doors from 10am. There’s a free drink on arrival, roaming canapรฉs from 2pm to 3pm, a punter prize draw, and full TAB facilities for those who fancy a flutter.

Bundarra

Keep it simple at the Commercial Hotel in Bundarra, where nibbles will be served from 2pm to 4pm.

Tenterfield

The Bowlo Club & Motor Inn in Tenterfield is inviting locals to gather their friends, dress up, and enjoy the race at The Bowlo. The restaurant is open for lunch from 11.30am to 2.30pm and dinner from 5.30pm to 8pm, with a Melbourne Cup menu and platters available.

Spots are limited, so book your platter early. Reservations on (02) 6736 1848.

Not fussed about horses?

The only thing racing at Armidale Racecourse this week is the gardening. The New England Garden Festival runs there from Thursday, 29 October, to Tuesday, 3 November, alongside the New England Open Gardens program. It isn’t a Melbourne Cup event, but it’s a fine way to spend the long weekend if you’d rather back a rose than a racehorse.

What about the rest of the region?

Just because we haven’t mentioned your home town doesn’t mean the clubs and pubs are sitting this one out. Plenty of Cup Day sweeps and long lunches are only ever advertised on a chalkboard or a local Facebook page.

If your club, pub, or community group is putting on a Melbourne Cup event, let us know and we’ll help spread the word. Good luck with the sweep, and may your horse at least finish the race.
