Crews will start a $5.3 million upgrade of the Kamilaroi Highway south of Gunnedah on Monday, 2 November, with new drainage and a fresh road surface planned to help the highway cope with heavy rain.
The work covers a three-kilometre section of highway about two kilometres south of Gunnedah, which is used every day by thousands of locals, tourists, and freight operators.
“The Kamilaroi Highway is an important link between towns and major regional centres across north-western NSW, carrying local traffic alongside the freight that helps keep our regional economy moving,” said Labor Duty MLC for Oxley Anthony D’Adam.
Planned work includes replacing and extending the existing concrete drainage, improving drainage to help clear water during heavy downpours, and resurfacing the road.
The project is expected to be finished by mid-April 2027. It is part of the NSW Government’s ongoing work to maintain regional roads, improve road safety, and keep communities connected.
“This $5.3 million upgrade will improve drainage, renew the road surface and help the highway better withstand heavy rainfall, while reducing the need for future maintenance and repairs,” D’Adam said.
Motorists can expect to see crews on the road between 7am and 6pm on weekdays, and from 8am to 5pm on Saturdays.
Lane closures and a reduced speed limit of 40 km/h will be in place through the work area for the safety of workers and motorists. Some locations within the work area may also need 24-hour traffic control.
Motorists are advised to drive to the conditions and follow the directions of signs and traffic control.
“The Minns Labor Government is investing in the regional roads communities rely on every day, because keeping these connections safe and reliable matters to local families, businesses and freight operators,” D’Adam said.
“By investing in the roads that connect our regional communities, we’re helping people get where they need to go and supporting the businesses and industries that depend on these routes.”
