Do you know a young person in Narrabri who is making a difference? Nominations are now open for the 2027 Lillian Hulbert Memorial Prize, a $10,000 award recognising outstanding young people from the Narrabri area.
The prize was established in 2007 by Thomas Whipp Hulbert in memory of his mother, Lillian Alice Hulbert.
It honours young people aged 15 to 17 who have shown excellence in one or more of the following areas:
- an act of bravery or heroism
- academic achievement
- sporting achievement
- contribution to charitable work in the Narrabri Shire.
“This year our four finalists were all of exceptional calibre, with each young person demonstrating an amazing dedication to making a difference,” said Narrabri Shire Mayor Darrell Tiemens.
“This year’s Lillian Hulbert Prize recipient, Elizabeth Faris, demonstrated all the qualities of bravery, charitable service, academic excellence and sporting success.
“From representing Narrabri internationally through Rotary Youth Exchange, to excelling in sport at state level, contributing to our Show Society and achieving remarkable academic success – her commitment to community and personal excellence was truly inspiring.”
Mayor Tiemens said the prize remained one of the region’s most meaningful opportunities to celebrate the achievements of local youth.
“The Lillian Hulbert Memorial Prize is a powerful way to recognise and celebrate achievements and dedication shown by young people such as Elizabeth, along with the incredible finalists we see each year,” he said.
To be eligible, nominees must be 15, 16 or 17 years of age as at 24 February 2027, and be born in Narrabri or within a 55 kilometre radius of the Narrabri Post Office.
The criteria were set by Thomas Whipp Hulbert in honour of his mother and are not determined by Narrabri Shire Council.
Candidates must be willing to take part in an interview process in early February 2027. The winner will be announced and presented on Wednesday, 24 February 2027.
Prize money is held in trust until the recipient turns 21.
Nominations close at 5pm on Monday, 30 November.
“I encourage residents to consider the young people in Narrabri making a difference in our community and nominate them for this prestigious award,” Mayor Tiemens said.
