Major milestone for Violet Street Bridge replacement

Victoria Street Bridge (Narrabri Shire Council)

The replacement of Narrabri’s Violet Street Bridge has reached a major milestone, with foundation piling works now complete.

The final pile was driven on 24 June for the bridge’s abutment at the Selina Street end, marking the completion of foundation piling.

The first concrete pour for the abutment at the Tibbereena Street end has also been completed.

Work is continuing with all pier piles being cut to the required design level, while steelwork for the pile caps is underway.

Attention will now turn to demolishing the old bridge piers, which were used to support the temporary pile guide frames. Demolition of the existing piers is scheduled to begin in mid-July.

The next stage of construction will include building the pile caps, blade piers and the abutment at the Selina Street end of the bridge.

This phase is expected to take about six weeks, after which construction of the headstocks and installation of the girders will begin, bringing the project another step closer to completion.

A detour remains in place via Selina Street, the Newell Highway and Tibbereena Street and will continue for the duration of the works..

The bridge replacement, being delivered by Saunders Civilbuild Pty Ltd, will provide unrestricted load capacity, accommodating all vehicle types.

The new bridge will also feature a dedicated shared path for pedestrians and cyclists on each side of the structure. It will reduce the time required to remove barriers during flood events, helping minimise disruption for residents and road users.

Project updates are available on the dedicated project webpage, Council’s social media channels, local print and broadcast media, and Council’s website.

The $7 million Violet Street Bridge replacement project is jointly funded by the Australian and NSW governments. The Australian and NSW governments have contributed $5 million through the Infrastructure Betterment Program under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements, with the remaining $2 million provided through the Australian Government’s Roads to Recovery Program.
