NAIDOC basketball gala day returns to Armidale

Armidale will again host the NAIDOC Deadly 3×3 Basketball Gala Day next month, with an Olympic medallist among the drawcards for what organisers hope will be an even bigger celebration than last year.

The free event returns to The Den Basketball Stadium on Butler Street on Thursday, 9 July, as part of this year’s NAIDOC Week celebrations, which carry the theme 50 Years of Deadly. The theme marks five decades of recognising and honouring the achievements, strength and resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities.

Hosted by Basketball NSW in partnership with Pathfinders, Services Our Way and Armidale Basketball Association, the day is open to all ages, abilities and skill levels and will feature basketball skills sessions, a 3×3 tournament, cultural activities, entertainment, and arts and crafts.

A special guest appearance from Annie La Fleur, Australian Opals Olympic silver medallist, former WNBA player and Head of Participation and Community at Basketball NSW, is among the highlights. Ms La Fleur’s achievements on and off the court have made her an inspiring figure for young athletes and communities across Australia.

Competition categories on the day include a skills session for children aged four to nine, an under-12 3×3 competition for players born in 2015, 2016 or 2017, an under-14 competition for those born in 2013 or 2014, and an under-16 competition for players born in 2011 or 2012. Players can register individually or as part of a team.

Last year’s event drew more than 100 children and young people, with strong support from local businesses, community organisations, volunteers and families. Organisers are hoping to build on that success in 2026.

Registration is free and open through Basketball Connect at https://registration.basketballconnect.com/login
