Essential workers relocating to the Northern New England region will now receive expanded support, with the NSW Government announcing the extension of The Welcome Experience to include the Tenterfield Shire from 1 July 2026.

Delivered locally by Local Connect, the expansion builds on the program’s existing footprint across the Glen Innes Severn and Inverell Shire Local Government Areas, further strengthening efforts to attract, settle and retain a sustainable regional workforce.

The Welcome Experience is a free, concierge-style service designed to support essential workers and their families as they relocate to regional NSW. The program provides tailored, on-the-ground assistance to help individuals and families establish themselves in their new community – from navigating local services and housing to building social connections.

Local Connect Executive Director, Margot Davis, said the expansion into Tenterfield is a natural and
important step for the region.

“We know that relocating to a new area can be both exciting and challenging. Through The Welcome
Experience, we’re able to support essential workers and their families not just once they arrive, but right from the early stages of their move,” said Ms Davis.

“Expanding into Tenterfield means more people will have access to personalised, place-based support before, during and after their relocation — helping them feel informed, connected and confident about making the move. This ultimately strengthens our ability to support long-term retention, ensuring people feel genuinely at home in the region.”

Minister for Regional NSW Tara Moriarty said regional communities rely on essential workers, and The Welcome Experience is helping them settle and stay while strengthening local workforces and economies.

“By expanding the program, we’re making it easier for essential workers to relocate and build a future in communities like Tenterfield,” Minister Moriarty said.

“It provides practical support – from housing and childcare to community connections and partner
employment – easing the pressures of moving while supporting local jobs and economies.”

The inclusion of Tenterfield Shire reflects the NSW Government’s ongoing commitment to addressing regional workforce needs and supporting essential services in communities across the state.

Local Connect will work closely with local employers, community organisations and service providers in Tenterfield to ensure new arrivals are well-supported and connected from day one.

Essential workers considering a move, or already planning their relocation, to the Tenterfield Shire, Glen Innes Severn Shire and Inverell Shire Local Government Areas are encouraged to register for The Welcome Experience to access free, personalised support.
