Two men die after separate New England crashes within a day of each other
Two men have died in hospital after separate crashes on roads around Armidale within a day of each other, both within the same week.
A 67-year-old man died after his car collided with a road train at a roundabout on the New England Highway at Armidale. About 5.20am on Sunday 2 August, officers attached to New England Police District were travelling on the New England Highway near Armidale when they came across a two-vehicle crash at Endeavour Drive. Police saw a Kenworth road train and a Mazda sedan had collided at the roundabout.
NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the driver of the car, the 67-year-old man, before he was taken to Armidale Hospital in a serious condition for treatment of head injuries. The driver of the road train, a man also in his 60s, was given a roadside breath test, which returned a negative result.
A Westpac Rescue Helicopter was tasked by NSW Ambulance to Armidale Hospital about 6am, once the man had been treated at the scene and transported there. The helicopter team was called in to airlift him to John Hunter Hospital, in a serious but stable condition, for specialist assessment.
An investigation into that crash began and remains ongoing. On Monday 10 August, police were notified the 67-year-old man had died in hospital.
The second death followed a crash the day after the road train collision. A 70-year-old man died after being struck by a bus while cycling at Dangarsleigh, about 10 kilometres south of Armidale. Emergency services were called to Old Gostwyck Road, Dangarsleigh, about 7.30am on Monday 3 August, following reports of a crash. Officers attached to New England Police District attended and located a cyclist who had been struck by a bus.
The man was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics and a Westpac Rescue Helicopter critical care medical team, who were tasked to the scene about 8am, for head and suspected spinal injuries. He was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital in a serious condition. On Sunday 9 August, police were notified the man had died in hospital.
Reports will be prepared for the coroner in both cases.
