Be the hope our community needs: Support the Red Shield Appeal

The Salvation Army is calling on people across the New England North West to support this year’s Red Shield Appeal, with funds raised set to assist locals facing growing financial pressure.

Now in its 62nd year, Australia’s largest and longest-running door-knock appeal aims to raise $41 million nationally to fund critical community programs.

Major Bruce Harmer, External Communications Manager (NSW), said rising cost-of-living pressures and global uncertainty were placing significant strain on households.

“People in our community are doing it tough. Many are struggling to make ends meet and are close to breaking point,” Major Harmer said.

“That’s why we’re asking locals to get behind the Red Shield Appeal and be the hope our community needs right now.”

Funds raised in the New England North West will remain in the region, supporting people experiencing hardship.

“There’s no better way to support those doing it tough than by donating or volunteering. We rely on community support to continue our work,” Major Harmer said.

The appeal culminates in Red Shield Weekend on 30–31 May. People can get involved by volunteering at shopping centres, door-knocking, fundraising online, hosting workplace or school collections, or making a donation.

The Salvation Army is seeking 15,000 volunteers nationwide. To get involved, visit salvationarmy.org.au/red-shield-appeal.

Last year, through more than 400 centres and 2,000 services across Australia, The Salvation Army provided:

  • assistance to one person every 17 seconds
  • more than 1.74 million sessions of care to over 228,000 people
  • more than one million nights of accommodation
  • more than 1.4 million meals through homelessness services
