Two of Australia’s leading classical musicians will take to the stage in Tamworth, Armidale and Gunnedah next month, with pianist Konstantin Shamray and clarinettist David Griffiths set to perform a special chamber music recital.
The performances will be held at the Armidale Town Hall on 7 May, the Chapel Theatre in Tamworth on 8 May, and The Civic in Gunnedah on Saturday 9 May.
The program will showcase both instruments through a mix of classical and lighter works, featuring Brahms’ F minor Sonata and Weber’s Grand Duo, alongside a solo piano performance of Novacek’s Four Rags.
Griffiths has built a reputation as one of Australia’s leading clarinettists, recognised not only for his work as a soloist but also as a chamber musician, recitalist and educator. He has performed concertos with major orchestras including the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra, Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Victoria, Shanghai Radio Orchestra, Macau Orchestra and the Real Filharmonía de Galicia. He is also a member of the Australia Ensemble@UNSW and Ensemble Liaison.
Shamray rose to international prominence after winning both First Prize and the People’s Choice Award at the Sydney International Piano Competition. Known for his dynamic performances, he continues to perform internationally with leading orchestras and presenters, with a style noted for its technical command and expressive range.
Gunnedah Conservatorium Director Rebecca Ryan said the performance would bring high-level musicianship to a regional audience.
“These are the kinds of musicians you’d normally travel to a major city to hear with a symphony orchestra, so having them here in Gunnedah is something really special,” she said.
Ms Ryan said the program offered a mix of styles and moods.
“The program has a wonderful sense of contrast and character, from the depth of Brahms to the energy and charm of the lighter works,” she said.
With the concert falling on Mother’s Day weekend, she said it also presented an opportunity for a different kind of celebration.
“And with the concert falling over Mother’s Day weekend, it’s also the perfect chance to treat your mum to something a little different.”
