Armidale exhibition brings new meaning to ‘Don’t Paint Flowers’

Armidale-based artist Bramantyo will present Don’t Paint Flowers, an intimate guerrilla exhibition running from 25 August to 23 September 2025, by private appointment only.

A disciple of the late Indonesian poet and dramatist Rendra, Bramantyo has practised traditional Javanese disciplines of creativity and life force for more than 40 years. His works confront questions of creativity, authenticity and community in the face of contemporary challenges. Far from decorative, the paintings are intended as energy transmitters to sharpen awareness, uplift the spirit and nurture the life force of those who encounter them.

“I want people to look at my works and think, ‘I can do better than that!’ and actually go and do it,” Bramantyo said.

The exhibition bypasses conventional gallery systems. Instead, it offers visitors a direct and personal encounter with the artist’s practice inside the transformed living room and kitchen of a small prefabricated Tammy House in Armidale.

Visitors will be invited to engage with the works and reflect on issues of the times. Groups of up to three, by prior arrangement, will also be asked to share their thoughts on pressing questions facing life today. With written consent, some conversations may be recorded for a social media project, with responses helping to shape the artist’s future work.

Bramantyo has previously exhibited in Yogyakarta and Ngawi in Indonesia, Brixton and Ladbroke Grove in London, and Oakland in California.

Appointments can be made via SMS or WhatsApp at 0406 502 717 or by email at ranggalana@gmail.com.

This exhibition takes place on the lands of the Anaiwan and Gamilaraay peoples. Bramantyo acknowledges the harm caused by settler colonialism and the ways its legacy continues today. He pays respect to their ancestors and Elders, past, present and emerging.
