Oxley Highway closed, livestock killed when road train crashes at Goolhi

Double demerit points will apply for the holiday season

The Oxley Highway is closed in both directions at Goolhi, west of Gunnedah, due to a truck crash this morning which has resulted in the deaths of hundreds of sheep.

NSw Police say the crash, near Booloola Road, occurred about 1am today (Thursday 16 April 2026), and resulted in the highway being closed between Mullaley and Coonabarabran.

The male driver was taken to Tamworth Hospital, police told his injuries are not life-threatening.

Several hundred head of sheep died as a consequence of the crash.


Diversions are now in place

Eastbound: Newell Hwy, Kamilaroi Hwy to Boggabri. Grain Valley Rd to Mullaley.

Westbound: Grain Valley Rd to Boggabri, Kamilaroi Hwy, Newell Hwy.

This diversion is suitable for all vehicles and will add approximately 2hrs 35 mins to your trip time.

Unless specified otherwise, operators of Class 1,2 & 3 vehicles travelling under a Notice must consult their relevant enforceable network map to confirm a suitable approved alternative route.

Operators of Class 1, 2 & 3 vehicles travelling under a Permit must not travel off the approved route listed in the permit unless an updated permit is obtained from the NHVR

This diversion is suitable for all vehicles.
