A fundraising appeal has been launched to support the young son of 22-year-old Kempsey man Daniel Meehan, who died following a horror truck crash on Thunderbolts Way near Walcha earlier this week.

The fundraiser, organised by family member Fergus O’Connor, is seeking to assist with funeral costs and provide ongoing support for Daniel’s 22 month old son, Charlie.

In a statement shared on the fundraising page, Daniel’s family described the profound loss felt by those closest to him.

“We are completely shattered to share the sudden and tragic loss of our beloved son, brother, and father, Daniel, who passed yesterday, just a day after his birthday, at just 22 years old in a devastating truck accident,” the fundraising page reads.

“Daniel’s greatest love in this world was his beautiful little boy, Charlie. Being Charlie’s dad was what made him happiest, and the bond they shared was truly special.”

The Kempsey based family said Daniel had recently taken on a cattle carting role, working for a Northern Tablelands based company, and was working towards buying a home for himself and his son.

“He was so proud of that goal and was doing everything he could to build a better future.”

More than 160 donations have already been received, with the appeal raising money primarily to cover funeral and associated expenses.

The family said any funds raised beyond the cost of the funeral would go directly towards supporting young Charlie’s future.

“Any funds raised beyond this will go directly to supporting his son Charlie, helping provide for his future and ensuring that a part of his dad’s love continues to care for him as he grows.”

Friends and members of the wider community have begun sharing the appeal across social media, with many describing Daniel as a hardworking young father taken far too soon.

Daniel’s sister, Caitlyn O’Connor, was one of those paying tribute on social media, describing her brother as “the life of every party”.

“Yesterday, our family lost my beautiful little brother, just one day after his 22nd birthday. Our hearts are eternally broken,” she said.

“My little brother; the life of every party; I love you. Forever young.”

The family has encouraged anyone unable to donate to share the appeal on GoFundMe.

“Every donation, no matter how small, means the world to us.”
