About us

The Inspector of Custodial Services (ICS) is appointed to inspect adult correctional facilities and youth justice centres, and report to Parliament on the findings of these inspections. The ICS also oversees the Official Visitor Program in correctional facilities and youth justice centres.

About the role

Official Visitors work to resolve enquiries and complaints made by inmates and assist in monitoring the conditions and treatment of inmates in custodial centres throughout New South Wales (NSW). Official Visitors are community-based appointments made by the Minister for Corrections.

Successful applicants are normally assigned to one custodial centre for up to four years to conduct half day or full day visits to the centre either once a fortnight or once a month.

Applications are invited for appointments to centres in the Sydney region and across New South Wales.

Vacancies exist at the following centres but can extend to others. Suitable candidates may be added to a talent pool to fill any appointments that may become vacant over the next 18 months.

  • Broken Hill Correctional Centre
  • Glen Innes Correctional Centre
  • South Coast Correctional Centre
  • Tamworth Correctional Centre
  • Wellington Correctional Centre

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, women, and people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Essential requirements

  • Report writing skills, computer skills, and access to the internet and email.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to attend training or corporate activities when required (1 or 2 times per year)

Appointments are subject to reference checks. Some roles may also require the following checks/ clearances:

  • National Criminal History Record Check in accordance with the Disability Inclusion Act 2014.
  • Association disclosures.
  • Working with Children Check clearance in accordance with the Child Protection (Working with Children) Act 2012
