Crime Stoppers and NSW Police engage with Armidale community on crime prevention

Crime Stoppers NSW and NSW Police visited Armidale today, Thursday, 18 June, to engage with the local community and promote crime prevention and reporting.

The organisations encouraged residents to report information about a range of offences, including property theft, assault, online crime, cyberbullying and scams.

CEO of Crime Stoppers NSW, Peter Price AM, said community members often share information about suspicious activity through social media and local online groups.

“We often see people are willing to share information on social media, for example with online community groups, so neighbours and the local community are aware of what’s happening in their neighbourhood,” Price said.

“And while that information can help people to be aware of suspicious activity, sharing that information with Crime Stoppers ensures it’s passed on to police so the appropriate action can be taken.”

Price said Crime Stoppers provides a simple way for the community to report information and ensure it reaches the appropriate authorities.

“Our website makes it easier for the community to report information, in a safe and secure way,” Price added.

Representatives from Crime Stoppers and NSW Police spoke with members of the Armidale community and distributed information and promotional materials aimed at supporting crime prevention and reporting.

New England Police District Commander, Superintendent Chris McKinnon, said information provided by the public plays an important role in policing.

“The community are our eyes and ears, and their information is often the crucial piece of the puzzle when it comes to solving crimes,” Superintendent McKinnon said.

“Crime Stoppers is that important conduit between the community and police, allowing us to gather information quickly and anonymously, if needed.”

Community members can report crime through a number of channels, including the Police Assistance Line (PAL), their local police station, Crime Stoppers, or Triple Zero (000) in an emergency.

The public can report theft and other non-urgent matters to the Police Assistance Line on 131 444. Information about suspicious activity or criminal offences can be provided to Crime Stoppers online at https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au/ or by calling 1800 333 000.
