Uralla Shire Council reduces councillor fees ahead of rates increase

Uralla Shire Council has adopted reduced councillor fees for the 2026–27 financial year, a move intended to demonstrate solidarity with residents as the community prepares for a forthcoming rates increase.

Under the decision, the annual fee for councillors will be reduced to $11,290, the minimum amount set by the Local Government Remuneration Tribunal for councils in the same category. The fee is 19 per cent lower than the current annual payment of $13,930.

The Mayor’s annual fee has been set at $31,510, reflecting the additional responsibilities of the role.

Council said the reduction highlights its commitment to sharing in the financial pressures facing the community while continuing to meet its obligations to provide essential services, maintain infrastructure and plan for the shire’s future.

Under the Local Government Act, councils must review and set fees each year within the range prescribed by the tribunal. The adopted fees comply with those requirements while reflecting Council’s decision to prioritise community sentiment during a period of rising costs.

Mayor Robert Bell said the decision followed careful consideration of Council’s responsibilities and the broader operating environment.

“Council reviews its fees annually in accordance with the Tribunal’s determination,” Mayor Bell said.

Councillors undertake a wide range of responsibilities, including representing residents, contributing to strategic decision-making and supporting the delivery of local services and infrastructure that benefit the community.

Mayor Bell said he opposed setting the lower councillor fee, arguing it did not provide reasonable compensation for the responsibilities of the role.

The adopted fees will take effect from 1 July 2026.
