Work has begun on a $1.42 million project to improve pedestrian safety and accessibility at Tamworth’s Sports and Entertainment Precinct.
The upgrades cover the roundabout outside the Australian Equine and Livestock Events Centre (AELEC), areas adjacent to the Tamworth Regional Entertainment and Conference Centre (TRECC) on The Ringers Road, and Longyard Drive.
The project includes new wombat and pedestrian crossings, safety fencing, additional street lighting and a three-metre-wide shared path along Longyard Drive.
The works are designed to improve safety for pedestrians and motorists while strengthening connections within the area’s active transport network.
NSW Roads Minister Jenny Aitchison said regional infrastructure needed to keep pace with growing communities.
“The upgrade to the Sports and Entertainment Precinct will deliver important safety improvements, whilst enhancing access throughout the precinct for the community to enjoy,” she said.
Tamworth Regional Council manager operations Murray Russell said Council was “constantly looking to make our roads and active transport network safer and more accessible”.
“We are currently updating our Active Transport Strategy through community consultation to identify other projects to expand our active transport network,” he said.
Construction is being carried out in stages from July to December.
“There will be some road closures during that time and traffic control will be in place when needed,” Russell said.
The project is jointly funded by the Australian and NSW governments through the Australian Government’s Road Safety Program.
The program is aimed at reducing serious injuries and fatalities on the road, with a focus on vulnerable road users including pedestrians and cyclists. Since 2023, the Australian and NSW governments have committed more than $586 million to road safety projects across NSW under the program.
Community consultation on Tamworth Regional Council’s Active Transport Strategy remains open until August 12.
