Tamworth’s Capitol Theatre will host the Australian premiere of Pontypool, the cult horror thriller based on Tony Burgess’ novel and film of the same name, with the Tamworth Dramatic Society staging eight shows from 7 to 15 August.
The story follows a small Ontario town gripped by a virus outbreak that drives its victims crazy and violent. From a cramped basement radio station, shock-jock Grant Mazzy and his small team desperately report on the chaos outside, uncovering the unsettling truth behind the virus.
Burgess adapted his own novel for the screen first, with the 2008 film directed by Bruce McDonald and starring Stephen McHattie as Grant Mazzy going on to become a cult favourite, before Burgess adapted the story again for the stage.
Director Liam Higham said bringing the Australian premiere to Tamworth was a daunting but exciting experience.
“This show means so much to me as I love horror with a message, it’s a cathartic way to be uncomfortable in a controlled environment while also learning about ourselves and the world around us,” he said.
“I love the metaphor of people repeating phrases as a cover to justify awful behaviors (eg. ‘Boys will be boys’; ‘Make America Great Again’), as well as questioning the ethical responsibility of the media and the risk of perpetuating these ideas further in the very act of covering them.
“This show does all that with a bunch of flawed but loveable characters, dark comedy, witty dialogue and visuals that are sure to leave audiences talking about it for a long time after.”
The Tamworth Dramatic Society will hold its Gala Opening Night on Friday, 7 August, in support of Talking Threads in partnership with South Tamworth Bowling Club. Foyer doors open at 6pm for complimentary nibbles and a drink, followed by a short presentation at 6:45pm and the show at 7:30pm.
The production stars local talent from across the Tamworth region.
