The NSW Office of Sport is encouraging primary schools to register for the inaugural Rising Warrior division at this year’s Winter Warrior event at Lake Keepit Sport and Recreation Centre.
Office of Sport Deputy Secretary Adam Berry said the expansion of the event would give younger students the chance to experience the popular adventure race for the first time.
“Winter Warrior is the Office of Sport’s adventure race that is ultimate test of endurance, resilience and teamwork for students.” said Berry.
“We’re excited to host Winter Warrior again in 2026 and include primary schools as part of the Rising Warrior event for the first time.”
Winter Warrior returns in August, bringing together students from across NSW to tackle an obstacle course designed to test strength, stamina and teamwork. Competitors navigate mud pits, log carries, a slip-and-slide and paddle sections as part of the challenge.
Students compete in teams of six across boys, girls and mixed divisions, with prizes also awarded to the best-dressed team.
For the first time, primary school students in Years 3 to 6 will compete in the new Rising Warrior division. The course is approximately half the distance of the secondary school course and will be held on Tuesday, 11 August. The secondary school Winter Warrior event will take place on Thursday, 13 August.
Lake Keepit Sport and Recreation Centre Program Coordinator Fiona McKnight said the new category would give younger students the opportunity to challenge themselves in a supportive environment.
“The event celebrates the spirit of determination, participation and resilience, encouraging students to become a “Winter Warrior” by stepping outside their comfort zone, supporting their peers and challenging themselves against the beautiful backdrop of Lake Keepit.
“For the first time in Winter Warrior history, we’re including primary schools through the Rising Warrior category.
“This exciting new division gives Years 3 – 6 students the opportunity to participate in a safe, supportive and exciting adventure race.”
Berry said organisers were expecting a record number of participants this year.
“We’re confident that Winter Warrior 2026 is going to break records and urge local schools to register now before it’s too late.”
McKnight encouraged schools to be part of the inaugural event.
“So, register your school for the first ever Rising Warrior to be a part of history and an experience your students will never forget.”
