Newcomers and former rowers alike are being invited to hit the water at the Moree Water Ski Park this weekend, with the free Come and Try Rowing Weekend backed by new funding from Moree Plains Shire Council.
Outback Rowing Australia will run the event on Saturday and Sunday, 4 to 5 July, offering locals a chance to try the sport regardless of experience. Boats, equipment and guidance will be provided, with organisers encouraging anyone curious about rowing to come along.
The event is one of four to share in $20,000 through the council’s Event Partnership Fund for the 2025-26 financial year. Moree Boat Club received $4,000 for the Outback Rowing Australia Bush Boats Launch and Come and Try event.
The other successful applicants were The Pool Hall Moree, awarded $10,000 for the “Best in the West” 8 Ball Knockout Tournament, the Moree and District Chamber of Commerce, awarded $3,000 for the Moree Chamber Wellness Series, and Pringy’s Farm Balnagask, awarded $3,000 for Blooms on Balnagask.
Mayor Susannah Pearse said the fund was designed to support events that brought visitors to the shire and boosted local economic activity.
“It is fantastic to see the energy and commitment of the event organisers and committees that make our Shire a wonderful place to live, visit and play,” Mayor Pearse said.
The Event Partnership Fund offers partnership funding of up to $10,000 for events that enhance the amenity, wellbeing and economic vibrancy of the Moree Plains Shire. Council has encouraged organisers with new event ideas, or plans to expand an existing event, to apply when the next funding round opens for 2026-27.
