Two 13-year-olds charged after alleged assault and theft in Moree

Two 13-year-old boys have faced court after allegedly assaulting a man and stealing from a vehicle in Moree over the weekend.

Police allege the boys stole items from a Toyota SUV parked in the driveway of a school at the corner of Boston Street and Carol Avenue about noon on Saturday.

The vehicle’s owner, a man in his 30s, confronted the pair, who were riding a motorcycle and allegedly not wearing helmets.

Police allege the boys threatened the man before swinging a log at him, chasing him across the road and striking him several times on the arm.

The pair allegedly rode away before returning a short time later and smashing the passenger-side window of the man’s Toyota SUV with a metal rod.

Following inquiries, including the use of a police drone, officers arrested both boys at a Tawarri Street address about 12:40 pm on Saturday. Police also seized a motorcycle.

One of the boys was charged with using an offensive weapon in company with intent to commit an indictable offence, assault occasioning actual bodily harm in company, disguising his face with intent to commit an indictable offence, larceny, destroying or damaging property, and riding as a motorcycle passenger without a helmet.

The second boy was charged with using an offensive weapon in company with intent to commit an indictable offence, attempted assault occasioning actual bodily harm in company, disguising his face with intent to commit an indictable offence, riding a motorcycle without a helmet while carrying an unhelmeted passenger, and negligent driving.

Both boys were initially refused bail before appearing before a children’s court on Sunday, where they were granted strict conditional bail. They are due to reappear before a children’s court on 23 July.
