When it comes to winning over diners, The Bolt Inn isn’t relying on a single signature dish or a passing trend.
Instead, it’s built its reputation on something much harder to achieve – consistency.
That unwavering commitment to exceptional food, genuine hospitality and a welcoming country pub atmosphere has seen the Uralla institution crowned Best Restaurant in the Best in the New England 2026 awards for the second consecutive year, successfully defending the title it claimed in 2025.
Hundreds of diners cast their votes, and while their stories were all different, the reasons they kept returning were remarkably similar. Time and again, voters spoke about consistently outstanding meals, friendly staff, perfectly cooked steaks and an atmosphere that makes every visit feel special.
Emily summed up the experience in just a few words.
“Consistently good and variety of meals. The staff are friendly and the atmosphere is always friendly and fun,” she said.
That consistency was perhaps the most common theme among the nominations.
Jamie praised the restaurant’s “consistently” great food and friendly atmosphere, while Debra said The Bolt Inn “consistently delivers high-quality meals with friendly, attentive staff”.
Monique said every visit was memorable.
“The food is always consistent. Always wonderful, polite, helpful, friendly staff,” she said.
“Pete the owner always pops around greeting his guests. It’s always such a wonderful experience.”
For many diners, however, one item on the menu stood above everything else.
Steak.
David said a recommendation from a friend completely changed his expectations.
“You cannot find a better rump steak meal anywhere,” he said.
“The most succulent meal I’ve ever had. The chips, salad and mushroom sauce are to die for.
“I’m new to the district, and now I encourage everyone I know to have a meal there. It’s worth timing your trip to have lunch at The Bolt.”
Cory described it simply as the “best steaks in town”, while Rose called it “the best place for a steak”.
Tommo went even further.
“Having travelled to 15 countries, I can honestly say that The Bolt Inn serves the best steak I have ever eaten,” he said.
“The standard they set is so high that I find myself disappointed whenever I order steak anywhere else.”
He said while the gravies, chicken parmigiana and ever-changing specials were all outstanding, it was the consistency and quality of every meal that kept customers coming back.
“The Bolt Inn isn’t just a great place to eat – it is an institution in Uralla.”
Behind every great meal, voters were quick to acknowledge the people making it happen.
Paul praised chef Rob as “one of the best chefs I have come across in regional Australia”, while Hugh challenged anyone to find “a better chef on the tools or a better cooked steak than Rob”.
“It’s perfect,” he said.
But exceptional food was only part of the winning formula.
Jeff described the venue as offering “outstanding service, great value and, most importantly, beautiful food in a warm and inviting environment.”
Kelly said “the service is impeccable, meals are always amazing and the ambience is perfect”, while Bron praised the staff for being “welcoming, accommodating to dietary requirements and all with a genuine smile”.
Visitors from outside Uralla are making the trip specifically to dine at The Bolt Inn.
Lisa said she and her family regularly travel from Tamworth just for lunch or dinner.
“The food is always amazing,” she said.
“The menu is superb, the steaks are always cooked perfectly, the staff are lovely and welcoming and the venue has a great atmosphere. Well worth the trip.”
Others said the venue had become much more than just somewhere to enjoy a meal.
Helen praised the variety of dining spaces and entertainment options, while Kym said The Bolt Inn had “the greatest community local pub feel” with regular entertainment nights and constantly changing specials.
Thomas said the venue had become “the flagship of the Uralla cafe society”, helping showcase the town as one of the region’s most welcoming destinations.
From perfectly cooked steaks and seasonal specials to genuine country hospitality and a beautifully restored historic setting, The Bolt Inn continues to prove why it has become one of the New England’s most celebrated dining destinations.
Winning Best Restaurant once is an achievement.
Winning it twice in a row suggests The Bolt Inn has found the recipe that diners simply can’t get enough of.
