New shade coming to Lions Park playground

Children playing at Lions Park will soon get relief from the summer sun, with Inverell Shire Council agreeing to fund a new shade structure over the playground equipment following years of community requests.

The $32,863.50 project will see Council contribute $27,863.50, with the Inverell Lions Club providing the remaining $5,000. The Lions Club brought the project forward after receiving numerous requests from the public for better shade coverage in the play area, and has also offered volunteer labour assistance where appropriate.

As part of the works, the height of an existing hard cover above a platform in the play area will need to be modified to ensure the new shade structure works effectively. Council staff have assessed the change and are satisfied it can be completed without compromising the safety or integrity of the existing structure.

Mayor Kate Dight said the project showed what council and community groups could achieve by working together.

“The project is a positive example of Council and community organisations working together to improve local facilities.

“This project will make Lions Park more comfortable and enjoyable for children and families, particularly during the hotter months. Council appreciates the contribution of the Inverell Lions Club and its ongoing commitment to enhancing this much-loved community space.”

The new structure is expected to improve protection from ultraviolet radiation, increase the usability of the playground over summer, and support the park’s role as a family-friendly recreational space.
