An Armidale-based not-for-profit has helped a major Chinese high school become the first in central China approved to deliver the NSW Higher School Certificate, extending the international reach of one of Australia’s most respected school qualifications.
Pathways Education Solutions (PES) supported Wuhan Ocean High School through the process of gaining recognition from the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA), making it only the second school on mainland China to offer the HSC. PES Chair Tim Catterall and PLC Armidale Principal Nicola Taylor travelled to Wuhan on 5 June for the official launch.
The HSC is currently offered by just nine schools outside NSW. Eight are overseas, and three of those are supported by PES — Wuhan Ocean High School, Beijing’s BZFLS, and Vietnam Australia School in Hanoi — placing the New England organisation at the centre of a growing international appetite for Australian senior schooling.
PES delivers the work in collaboration with PLC Armidale and PLC Sydney, drawing on teaching expertise from the region to help partner schools meet NESA’s standards. Its support spans curriculum planning, assessment design, compliance, examination readiness, teacher development and mentoring.
“Wuhan Ocean High School is the second school in mainland China to receive this honour, and it is an important milestone — for the school, for its students, and for the growing relationship between high-quality international schools in China and the New South Wales education community,” Mr Catterall said at the launch.
“The HSC has been offered for almost 60 years and is undertaken by more than 75,000 students each year. It is rigorous, externally assured, and recognised by universities in Australia and around the world.
“For students in Wuhan, it opens a recognised pathway to an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank and to universities here and overseas — while they remain in their own school community.”
Mr Catterall said the organisation’s role was to strengthen partner schools rather than replace their identity.
“Quality is not achieved through a single approval or document. It is achieved through disciplined partnership: capable teachers, strong programs, reliable assessment and a shared commitment to student success.”
PLC Armidale Principal Nicola Taylor said the occasion carried particular meaning given the two schools’ existing relationship.
“PLC Armidale has a long relationship with Wuhan Ocean High School, including the student study tours we’ve run together, so this occasion was a particularly meaningful one for us.
“It also reflects the value of our Pathways Program, which broadens our students’ horizons, builds their cultural awareness and helps prepare them to thrive in an increasingly connected world.”
