A 14-year-old boy has been charged after police allegedly found a knife and a throwing axe during a search in Moree overnight.
Police said officers from New England Police District were called to the corner of Adelaide and Boston streets about 9.15pm on Monday following reports a boy had attempted to steal from a vehicle.
Officers were told a group of young males had allegedly tried to break into a vehicle near Chester and Adelaide streets.
Following inquiries, and with the assistance of a PolAir remotely piloted drone, police located three boys walking nearby.
Police allege a search of the 14-year-old uncovered a knife, a throwing axe, a balaclava and a pair of gloves. Another balaclava and pair of gloves were allegedly found nearby.
The boy was arrested and taken to Moree Police Station, where he was charged with being armed with intent to commit an indictable offence, custody of a knife in a public place, and custody of an offensive implement in a public place.
He was granted conditional bail and is due to appear before a Children’s Court on 18 June.
The two other boys, aged 13 and 16, were issued move-on directions.
Investigations under Operation Soteria are continuing.
As the matter is before the courts and involves a child, the boy has not been identified.
