A TAFE NSW Tamworth student who changed careers in his 30s to pursue plumbing has been recognised at the 2026 TAFE NSW Gili Awards.
Brewarrina resident Chris Frail, 36, received the Construction and Energy Student of the Year award at the ceremony in Sydney on 3 June. The annual awards recognise the achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, staff and programs across TAFE NSW.
Frail was one of 14 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, staff members and programs recognised at the 36th annual Gili Awards.
A Ngemba man, Frail worked as a water operator with Brewarrina Shire Council for 15 years before taking up an opportunity to undertake a plumbing apprenticeship.
With support from TAFE NSW, he has since completed his qualification and was recently promoted to team leader at the council.
“It was such a surprise to be announced the winner and it feels like a reward for all the hard work I’ve put in,” Frail said.
“There are challenges living in a remote place and having to go back to TAFE NSW after being out of school for so long.
“But it all feels worthwhile now.”
Frail attended TAFE NSW Tamworth for one-week training blocks each month during term and said the experience provided him with the skills needed for his new role.
He has recently commenced a Certificate IV in Plumbing Operations at TAFE NSW Tamworth.
TAFE NSW Managing Director Chloe Read said the awards highlight the role of education and skills training in supporting career opportunities and communities.
“At TAFE NSW, we’re committed to creating culturally safe and inclusive learning environments where students like Chris feel supported and empowered to reach their full potential,” Read said.
“The Gili Awards reinforce the critical role of education in creating meaningful, enduring positive change – not just for students but also their families, employers, and communities.
“Chris’s story is an inspiring example of determination and leadership, and he should be very proud to be recognised among such outstanding finalists.”
