Police investigating Moree fire bug

Police are asking for any information as they search for a suspected fire bug in Moree after eight fires were started in one night.

Officers attached to the New England Police District are investigating eight fires that occurred between 5pm on Thursday 14 May and 3am on Friday 15 May.

NSW RFS Moree said that three were grass fires, while five were structure fires, all of unknown cause.

The blazes broke out at vacant properties on Jones Avenue, Wales Street, Tawarri Street and Anne Street.

All fires were extinguished by Fire and Rescue NSW crews with assistance from the NSW Rural Fire Service. No injuries were reported.

Police established crime scenes at all locations and investigations into the cause of the fires are continuing.

Local volunteer firefighters were praised for their efforts in getting so many fires under control quickly. NSW RFS also thanked residents who reported the fires quickly.

“We deeply appreciate the assistance from the community for calling 000 at the first opportunity.”

The volunteer service is also looking for new members, and will have representatives at the upcoming Moree Community Volunteer Expo, happening at Community College Northern Inland, 53 Greenbah Road Moree on Thursday 21 May.

“If you’ve thinking about becoming a member come along and have a chat.”

Anyone with information about the incidents is urged to contact police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
