Narrabri to benefit from Telstra 4G and 5G upgrade

Narrabri residents and businesses are set to receive improved mobile coverage and network performance, with Telstra upgrading the town’s mobile base station later this month.

The upgrade will boost 4G and 5G capacity across the Narrabri area, helping deliver faster download speeds, smoother streaming and improved reliability during periods of high demand.

Work on the site is scheduled to begin on 15 May 2026 and is expected to take around seven days to complete.

To safely carry out the upgrades, the mobile site will need to be temporarily switched off for up to 10 hours each day while works are underway.

Telstra said customers would be notified of the planned disruption via SMS, with outage updates available at telstra.com.au/outages.

“We know how important mobile connectivity is for Australians, whether you’re in the city or the country,” said Telstra Regional General Manager Michael Marom.

“As data use over our mobile network continues to grow, adding extra 4G/5G capacity to our mobile site in the area will help deliver faster downloads, smoother streaming and less congestion for customers.”

“While disruption is required while the upgrade is underway, we’ll only be switching off the site when we need to and will have it back online and working better than ever as quickly as possible.”

What Narrabri customers need to know

Telstra said the works would not affect NBN services, satellite internet services, PSTN landlines or coverage provided by other mobile networks.

If the Telstra site is offline, calls to Triple Zero from Telstra mobiles will automatically attempt to connect through another available network for emergency access.

Customers can continue making calls and sending texts during disruptions by enabling Wi-Fi Calling on compatible devices connected to Wi-Fi.

Local businesses are also encouraged to speak with their bank about connecting EFTPOS terminals to an NBN or Wi-Fi service to minimise transaction delays during the outage period.
