Moree community invited to nominate local Elders for Honour Roll

Moree Plains residents are being encouraged to recognise Elders who have helped strengthen relationships and bring the community together, with nominations now open for the Moree Plains Elder Honour Roll.

Delivered through the Moree Plains Shire Council Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) in partnership with the Moree Reconciliation Week Committee, the Honour Roll celebrates Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Elders aged 65 and over whose leadership, service and commitment have made a lasting impact across the shire.

Mayor Susannah Pearse said the initiative was an opportunity for the community to acknowledge people whose quiet dedication had helped shape a stronger and more connected Moree Plains.

“Our Elders are the backbone of this community. They have guided us, challenged us and inspired us to build stronger relationships across cultures,” Pearse said.

“This Honour Roll is about recognising those who have worked tirelessly, often quietly, to bring people together and create a more connected, understanding and respectful Moree Plains.”

Council is calling on residents to nominate people who have contributed to cross-cultural understanding through education, employment and training opportunities, community partnerships or grassroots local engagement.

“Reconciliation is not a single act, it’s a lifelong commitment,” Pearse said.

“We want to honour those who have shown that commitment through real action, real compassion and real leadership.”

Eligible nominees must be aged 65 years or older and have demonstrated a strong commitment to reconciliation and community involvement in Moree Plains.
