The New England Highway at Uralla has been closed in both directions following a burst water main, with emergency repairs causing major traffic disruptions through the town.
The closure affects Bridge Street between John Street and East Street, with diversions in place for all vehicles, including heavy freight.
Uralla Shire Council confirmed a major water pipe break near Dumaresq Street and the highway was repaired, with water services now restored to residents.
However, the highway remains closed while road works continue to repair the damage caused by the broken pipe and necessary repairs.
Transport for NSW is assisting with traffic management, with clearly signed detours directing traffic around the closure.
Northbound motorists are being diverted via East Street, Queen Street and John Street before rejoining the New England Highway.
Southbound traffic is being redirected via John Street, Bligh Avenue and East Street to reconnect with the highway.
The diversion routes are suitable for all vehicles, including B-doubles, although operators of restricted access vehicles are advised to check approved network maps or permits before travelling off designated routes.
Council said a temporary road fix is expected to be completed today, allowing the highway to reopen before permanent repairs are carried out.
Residents have been warned to expect increased traffic on local streets as a result of the detours, including heavy vehicles.
Council acknowledged the disruption and thanked the community for its patience.
“Our water team and contractors have done a tremendous job in getting this situation under control and thank you to residents for your patience and understanding,” the council said.
Motorists are being urged to avoid the area where possible and allow extra travel time. Up to date information can be found on Live Traffic.
