Drunk driver charged for crash near Tamworth

A woman has been charged after allegedly driving with a high-range blood alcohol level almost five times the legal limit before a crash that left a man seriously injured near Tamworth.

Emergency services were called to the New England Highway at Garoo, about 40km south of Tamworth, just after 3.40pm on Friday 13 February 2026, following reports of a collision between an SUV and a ute.

Officers from Oxley Police District were told the vehicles collided before the ute left the roadway and rolled.

The driver of the ute, a 30-year-old man, was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Tamworth Hospital in a serious condition with neck injuries.

The driver of the SUV, a 37-year-old woman, underwent a roadside breath test, which returned a positive result. She was also taken to Tamworth Hospital for treatment and mandatory testing.

Police will allege the woman later returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.232.

A crime scene was established and an investigation was launched by officers from Oxley Police District, with assistance from the Crash Investigation Unit and Traffic and Highway Patrol Command.

Following inquiries by the Northern Tablelands Crash Investigation Unit, the woman was issued a Court Attendance Notice on Tuesday 21 April 2026.

She has been charged with drive with high-range PCA (first offence), aggravated dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm – PCA, and negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm (first offence).

The woman is due to appear before Tamworth Local Court on Monday 1 June 2026.
