Gunnedah set to shine as Show weekend arrives

Gunnedah is gearing up for one of its most anticipated annual events, with Show week bringing a strong sense of excitement and community pride across the town.

Festivities begin on Thursday evening with the opening of the Art and Photography Exhibition, showcasing the depth of local talent, alongside the introduction of the 2026 Young Woman and Show Representative entrants and the presentation of the Wheat Competition — all firmly rooted in the region’s agricultural identity.

From Friday, the Gunnedah Showgrounds will come alive as Sideshow Alley opens at midday, transforming the heart of the town into a hub of colour, lights and activity. Gunnedah Show Society president Kath Wilkinson said this year’s event highlights the strength of local support.

“Sideshow Alley is looking incredible. The Showmen’s Guild have really looked after us this year and we are told it is the best line-up of sideshows Gunnedah Show has seen in 15 years,” Wilkinson said.

Saturday is expected to be the centrepiece of the weekend, drawing locals and visitors together for a full day of events that reflect Gunnedah’s character, from agriculture and horsemanship to motorsport and family entertainment.

A standout addition to this year’s program is the Turners Cycles and Outdoors Jackpot Motorbike Barrel Racing, bringing together riders from across the region.

Event organiser Samantha Trembath said the competition captures the spirit of Gunnedah and its surrounding communities.

“We’re excited to see riders of all ages and abilities take part. This event brings together everyone from competitive racers to farm riders, giving them the chance to test their skill and have some fun in the arena,” Trembath said.

“It’s about coming together as a community, from the farm to the racetrack, to enjoy the competition. With prize money across age categories and no engine capacity restrictions, it’s an inclusive event that encourages broad participation.”

The rodeo remains a cornerstone of the Gunnedah Show, continuing a long-standing tradition that draws strong local support each year.

“Always a favourite with the crowd is the rodeo. We have bull ride, steer wrestling, barrel racing, saddle bronc and more. Everyone is always glued to their seats cheering on the cowboys and cowgirls,” Wilkinson said.

Beyond the arena, the show highlights the best of Gunnedah, with livestock competitions, equestrian events, woodchop demonstrations, live music, family entertainment and fireworks all contributing to a program that reflects the town’s rural heritage and community spirit.

The 2026 Gunnedah Show will be held from 17–19 April at the Gunnedah Showgrounds.
