Tamworth ready to host NSW’s rising sporting stars this weekend

Tamworth will take centre stage this weekend as it welcomes some of New South Wales’ most promising young athletes for the 2026 Your Local Club Regional Academy Games, running from 17–19 April.

About 1,000 athletes, along with coaches, families and supporters, are expected to descend on the city, bringing a significant boost in activity and energy to the region. Competitors from across the state will take part in basketball, golf, hockey, netball, triathlon and softball at venues throughout Tamworth.

The Northern Inland Academy of Sport (NIAS) is hosting the event on behalf of the Regional Academies of Sport network, as part of its three-year tenure. Teams from all 11 regional academies will attend, alongside guest teams from Sydney.

NIAS regional manager Sue Charles said the Games were an opportunity to showcase both emerging talent and the host community.

“The Your Local Club Regional Academy Games offer a unique opportunity to bring together the very best emerging athletes from across the state, while also celebrating regional communities and the power of sport to inspire,” Charles said.

“Following a strong first year in Tamworth, we’re excited to build on that momentum in 2026 and continue delivering an event that showcases talent, teamwork and pride in regional New South Wales.”

Local venues are expected to be busy across the three days, with the influx of visitors providing a boost to local businesses and highlighting Tamworth’s capacity to host major regional events.
