The Moree community will come together on Anzac Day to mark the reopening of the town’s 103-year-old War Memorial Hall, a long-standing centrepiece of local life.

The reopening, part of the Moree RSL Sub-branch’s official commemorations on April 25, signals a new chapter for the historic building, which has served generations as a place for remembrance, events and shared experiences.

Originally unveiled in April 1923, the hall has undergone multi-million-dollar upgrades to better serve the community, including a new acoustic ceiling, improved accessibility, upgraded fire safety features, refurbished kitchen and bathrooms, new seating and a state-of-the-art audio-visual system.

As the town’s dedicated war memorial — once described by local media as a “Memorial of Freedom” — the building has long held a special place in Moree’s identity.

“We are delighted to finally be reopening our iconic Moree Memorial Hall.” said Moree Plains Mayor Susannah Pearse.

“It is not just a vital community asset but a renowned part of our main street landscape and it will be wonderful to see it filled with people once again.

“It is fitting this beloved facility will be reopened on ANZAC Day, honouring our war history while opening the doors to a vibrant new era for public arts, culture and community events.

“Following the ANZAC Day formalities, everyone is invited to stay for light refreshments and a look at the rejuvenated Moree Memorial Hall.”

A diverse program of events is expected to follow, bringing the renewed space to life over the next 12 months with activities including comedy, children’s theatre, live music, wrestling, expos, film screenings and community showcases.
