A beloved staple of Armidale’s East Mall has been recognised as the region’s literary heart, with Readers Companion winning Best Book Store in the Best in the New England 2025.
The locally-owned bookshop beat out stiff competition from across the region, taking out top honours thanks to its exceptional range, warm atmosphere, and knowledgeable, passionate team. For locals and visitors alike, Readers Companion is more than just a store — it’s a destination.
“A warm welcome, a fabulous array of books arranged to help you find what you’re looking for, book clubs and chocolate!” said Alison, capturing the charm that keeps readers coming back.
Roy and Michelle, the couple behind the counter and at the heart of the store, were praised time and again for their community-minded service. During COVID lockdowns, while all the stores around them closed, they didn’t just stay connected — they went mobile.
“They were ‘open’ even during the pandemic and delivered everywhere. Amazing,” said Margaret.
“Roy and Michelle are truly the heart and soul of this incredible bookshop,” said Kim. “Their delivery van of goodies was a lifesaver — dropping off board games for the kids and helping us stay sane. Their service is second to none.”
The shop’s reputation stretches far beyond Armidale. With shelves stocked high with everything from the latest releases to perennial favourites, children’s picture books to literary prizewinners, there’s something for every reader.
“They carry an incredible range,” said Jenny. “Not just the latest releases — you’ll find classics, staff picks, kids’ books, YA, graphic novels, even records on vinyl and bookish gifts. And best of all, the cluey staff are always happy to help you find what you’re looking for.”
During the Best in the New England voting, the team’s passion for books and people shone through in comment after comment.
“The staff are extremely well-versed in the books on offer,” said Jennifer, while Caroline praised the “wonderful atmosphere,” and Mez added, “Amazing selection, knowledgeable and relaxing space.”
Beyond the shelves, Readers Companion is active in local arts and culture, hosting book clubs, readings, and launch events. Susie described the store as “special and genuine… fun, community-focused and involved in all aspects of reading.”
It’s this commitment to the people of Armidale and the broader New England community that helped seal the win.
Mark didn’t mince words, calling it simply: “A gem. No contest.”
Whether you’re chasing a new release, looking for a rare gem, or just craving the joy of being surrounded by books, Readers Companion continues to be the region’s go-to literary hub.
As Alicia summed it up: “The store is a welcome oasis. This is my go-to bookshop, always.”
