New restaurant woos New England taste buds

They have not yet been open a year, but Uralla’s The Bolt Inn has secured one of the most emphatic wins yet in Best in the New England, taking out the Best Restaurant title with over 100 votes more than last year’s winner, The Cottage Restaurant and Bar.

Owned by Peter and Sally Strelitz, The Bolt Inn stands proudly on the corner of the New England Highway and Thunderbolt’s Way, housed in the beautifully restored 1909 Imperial Hotel. Since reopening in 2024 after an extensive two-year renovation, the venue has drawn consistent praise for its warm atmosphere, generous portions and menu that showcases the best of local produce.

However, what makes the Bolt Inn truly unique is the story behind it. Peter and Sally also own the award-winning meat company Milly Hill Meat and their decision to take over the historic pub was a strategic move to close the supply chain loop – a true paddock to plate experience.

“Our head chef Rob Taylor has a really big emphasis on using local and seasonal produce as much as possible,” owner Peter Strelitz said.

And it’s clearly working, with many of those who voted for The Bolt Inn singling out their steaks as the best in the New England.

“The best steak I have ever had is from The Bolt Inn. Customer service is top notch too.” Josh said.

Others praised the expertise of Head Chef, Rob Taylor.

“Chef Rob Taylor leads a tight kitchen. Fantastic grass-fed beef perfectly cooked. Amazing specials, a broad menu, high class Sydney restaurant flavours and the best chicken parmigiana around. Reliably fabulous every time,” Sarah said.

“Amazing food, outstanding service. Their head chef Rob Taylor is phenomenal,” said Bianca.

The service is equally memorable. Staff are known for their friendly, attentive approach and genuine care for guests, something that keeps people coming back.

“The staff are warm, welcoming & attentive, they even take the time to acknowledge your children & have colouring in for them. We drive a hour each way to eat here once a month & when family or friends visit from Victoria, this is our go to spot to show off the New England,” voter Alex said.

“The Bolt Inn’s customer service and food quality are of the highest,” said Ellie in her vote. “The venue is absolutely gorgeous, warm and welcoming. Everytime you dine there the food is amazing and the staff just wonderful and inviting.”

Another diner, Jessy, described it as a “hidden gem” where “every visit feels special”.

Peter said their amazing staff are the real secret behind the success of The Bolt Inn, and that the accolades belong to them.

“We are nothing without our staff, so this goes to all the great people that we have working with us, they’re just great.”

“We really appreciate our wonderful team, our great customers, and all the community support. We’re just blown away really,” Peter said.

With collaboration events like the recent Tyrrell’s Wine Night and plans for more to come, The Bolt Inn is not only raising the bar for regional dining – it’s redefining it. Whether you’re stopping in for a Sunday lunch, a glass of top-notch wine by the fire, or a weekend away, this award-winning Uralla gem is well worth the trip.
