Leading disability charity, Aruma, is helping Tamworth locals achieve their NDIS goals through person-centred active support and providing purpose-built homes with heart.
AnneMaria Headney is one of three current residents at Aruma’s Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) home in the suburb of Westdale. Thanks to the dedication of her support network, she recently regained her fine motor skills and the ability to feed herself, but it’s been a journey to get there.
“On top of her existing disabilities, AnneMaria was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease a few years ago. Her ability to do simple actions, like feeding herself, had been steadily deteriorating, and that was also taking a toll on her mental health. She was starting to lose motivation and give up on herself,” shared Aruma Support Worker Andrea Downs.
After multiple medical appointments, one of AnneMaria’s specialists recommended trying Botox injections to reduce the severity of some of her Parkinson’s symptoms. After a few rounds of Botox, the team started to notice improvement not only physically but also mentally.
“We’ve seen a huge change in AnneMaria. It’s not just that she’s regained control over her fine motor skills, but also her attitude. She is really proud that she can be more independent. Her mood has improved, and when her family recently came to visit, she was very proud to show them that she could eat and drink. It was a lovely moment,” said Andrea.
AnneMaria lives in one of the five self-contained, fully accessible SDA units on the property. There are currently two other residents.

and the trio enjoys sharing the large common backyard that has an undercover BBQ area with seating and gardens. However, there is room for more!
“We currently have a vacancy at the property, and I know the ladies are ready to meet a new housemate. It’s a great property because everyone has their privacy, but there are also lots of opportunities to interact with each other. We love to bake together, head out to Sunday karaoke and join in with the community,” said Andrea.
