Gunnedah Christmas toy appeal opens as families feel the pinch

Gunnedah Shire Council Business Support Officer (Economy and Growth) Sarah Huchins, Community and Social Planner Debra Hilton and Gunnedah Salvation Army Corps and Community Leader Sally Hall with the Gunnedah Shire Community Christmas Tree.

With living costs still climbing, Gunnedah Shire residents are being asked to help make Christmas a little lighter for local families doing it tough.

Donations are now open for the Gunnedah Shire Community Christmas Tree Toy Appeal, a long-running partnership between Gunnedah Shire Council and the Gunnedah Salvation Army that gives gifts to people in need over Christmas.

“We’re all feeling the pinch as prices go up, and a big event like Christmas can make people feel stressed, not joyful, as they consider the costs,” said Gunnedah Shire Council Community and Social Planner Debra Hilton.

“This initiative aims to relieve some of that stress for those who are feeling it the most, and to spread some hope through the generosity of others.”

New, unwrapped gifts can be placed under the Christmas trees at two locations:

  • Gunnedah Shire Council’s Administration Building, 63 Elgin Street, Gunnedah
  • Gunnedah Shire Library, 291 Conadilly Street, Gunnedah

Gift ideas include toys, clothing and accessories, books, sporting goods, games and activities, and gift vouchers.

Locals are also encouraged to think about choosing gifts suitable for older children.

For health and hygiene reasons, food items and pre-loved toys cannot be accepted.

Donations must be in before 5pm on 7 December, and gifts will be handed out to local families in the lead-up to Christmas.

Ms Hilton said families were under more pressure than ever as living costs continued to rise, and every gift would count.

“If you are able to donate a gift – even something small – it will make a big difference to struggling families in our Shire,” she said.
