Moree Plains Shire Council has a new general manager, with Steve Hamilton set to take the reins after four months with an acting chief at the helm.

Mr Hamilton, who brings extensive experience across both local and state government, will start on Monday, 9 November, leading the organisation as council delivers key services and outcomes for the community.

He was appointed under the NSW Office of Local Government’s procedures for the appointment and management of the general manager, following an interview process held as part of an extraordinary council meeting on Wednesday, 21 October.

The announcement comes as the Minister for Local Government threatens to place Moree Plains Shire Council into administration. Mr Hamilton was reportedly unfazed, giving assurances he was ready for whatever he had to deal with.

“I’m genuinely excited to be joining Moree Plains Shire Council and becoming part of the community,” said incoming Moree Plains Shire Council General Manager Steve Hamilton.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity, and I’m grateful for the confidence Council has placed in me.”

“Moree Plains has enormous potential, and I’m looking forward to working with our Councillors, staff and communities to deliver results that matter and make a positive difference to people’s lives.”

“Council is delighted to announce that we have appointed Steve Hamilton as General Manager,” said Moree Plains Shire Mayor Susannah Pearse.

“With an impressive resume spanning both Local and State Government roles and a track record of improving capital works delivery, Steve is a down to earth but highly motivated individual whose engaging nature will see him well placed to lead and inspire our organisation, and work collaboratively with our community and stakeholders.”

“Council is excited for what Steve will bring to the table and we look forward to introducing him to our community members.”

Mayor Pearse said council was confident Mr Hamilton’s experience and leadership would be a strong asset for both the organisation and the community.

She also acknowledged former Acting General Manager Ian Stoneman, who led the organisation through the recruitment and transition period.

“I would also like to extend council’s most sincere thanks to Mr Ian Stoneman who – as Acting General Manager for the past four months – has provided such a capable and safe pair of hands and worked tirelessly for our organisation,” Mayor Pearse said.

“I’m passionate about local government and believe in being approachable, listening to people and working together to achieve our shared priorities,” Mr Hamilton said.

“My wife Megan and I recently visited Moree and were made to feel very welcome by everyone we met.”

“I’m looking forward to getting to know our communities and being actively involved across the Shire.”
