Improved internet access is set to boost business opportunities, remote working, education and access to essential services across Glen Innes, with more than 3,000 homes and businesses now eligible for full fibre broadband upgrades.
More than 550 properties have already switched from older copper-based connections to nbn Fibre to the Premises (FTTP), providing access to faster speeds and more reliable internet.
The upgrades are expected to deliver significant benefits to the regional community, making it easier for residents to work from home, operate businesses, access online health services and stay connected with family and friends.
A further 1,650 homes and businesses using Fibre to the Curb (FTTC) technology can now request a full fibre upgrade without needing to sign up for a high-speed plan.
The improvements are particularly important for regional communities, where reliable digital connections can help overcome geographical barriers to employment, education and essential services.
Full fibre technology provides access to wholesale download speeds of up to 2,000 Mbps through participating providers, supporting improved video calls, faster downloads and multiple connected devices.
Glen Innes Severn Council Mayor Margot Davis welcomed the investment, saying stronger digital infrastructure would create greater opportunities for the community.
โImproved connectivity in Glen Innes will make it easier for people to work, study, run businesses, access healthcare and stay connected with family, services and opportunities.” said Davis.
โIn regional communities, reliable digital connectivity is essential infrastructure that underpins socio-economic wellbeing, education, workforce participation, business growth, community resilience and access to opportunity in the modern economy.โ
Head of Regional Engagement NSW Tom O’Dea said the upgrades would help meet the community’s growing reliance on digital technology.
โFibre is not only our fastest technology, but also our most reliable and future-ready one. As the region continues to grow, fibre upgrades are helping replace legacy copper infrastructure and provide access to a more reliable and resilient nbn network.” said O’Dea.
“Whether it’s running a business, working remotely, studying online or staying connected with family and friends, reliable broadband has become an essential part of everyday life.โ
The improvements also extend beyond the town’s fixed-line network, with upgrades to nbn’s fixed wireless infrastructure providing access to faster broadband speeds for more homes and businesses across the Glen Innes region.
Residents interested in upgrading can speak directly with nbn representatives at Glen Innes Newsagency and Gifts from 9am to 2pm on Tuesday 20, Wednesday 21 and Thursday 22 October.
The team will provide information about eligibility, available upgrades and how residents can access the improved network.
Residents and businesses can also check their eligibility at www.nbn.com.au/checkregional.
