Artworks priced from $99 to $12,000 will go on show at the 2026 Packsaddle Exhibition at NERAM in Armidale, with all money raised going directly to the gallery.

This yearโ€™s exhibition has no particular theme. Instead, the focus is on variety.

โ€œWe like to present as diverse a range of artworks as possible; however, there are a few pieces referencing the wonderful French artist, Matisse,โ€ said Packsaddle coordinator Moira Lloyd.

The range of work is wide.

โ€œItโ€™s hard to choose; thereโ€™s so much variety from so many different artists, including prints from well-known and established artists, some quirky glasswork, delicate ceramics, wood sculptures and paintings from emerging artists exploring new themes,โ€ said Ms Lloyd.

The works are chosen by the Packsaddlers, a dedicated group of volunteers. They engage with a number of Sydney galleries and a large number of individual artists and printmakers.

โ€œWorking with a variety of sources enables us to select artworks to suit all tastes and budgets,โ€ said Ms Lloyd.

Packsaddle also gives people a chance to start or build a collection. Ms Lloyd has seen first-time buyers return year after year.

โ€œThereโ€™s nothing more exciting than to see people who bought their first artwork at Packsaddle, returning each year to add another work to their collection,โ€ said Ms Lloyd.

The exhibition now has a second generation of buyers too.

โ€œIn fact, itโ€™s an intergenerational thingโ€ฆ we have a number of sons and daughters of early supporters of Packsaddle who are now buying their first Packsaddle artwork,โ€ said Ms Lloyd.

For those buying their first original artwork, her advice is simple.

โ€œBuy what you love and what you can afford,โ€ said Ms Lloyd.

Choosing between a painting, a print and a sculpture comes down to personal taste.

โ€œSome people love the intimacy of prints, others like paintings and then there are those who prefer sculptures or ceramics, often because they have no wall space left,โ€ said Ms Lloyd.

Packsaddle is also a platform for emerging artists, who can find it hard to show their work to a wide audience.

โ€œPacksaddle provides a rare opportunity for emerging artists to have their artwork displayed in a professionally curated exhibition in a leading regional gallery,โ€ said Ms Lloyd.

Over the past 40 years, Packsaddle has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for NERAM. All money raised goes directly to the gallery to support a range of activities, from acquisitions and travelling exhibitions to education programs and conservation of the permanent collections.

โ€œRegional galleries are notoriously underfunded,โ€ said Ms Lloyd.

โ€œExhibitions such as this can support activities that galleries may not be able to afford out of their general operating budget,โ€ said Ms Lloyd.

Packsaddle has contributed to more than 50 acquisitions for NERAMโ€™s permanent collection.

โ€œKnowing that through the generosity of our buyers, we have been able to purchase artworks that enhance NERAMโ€™s collections is just so satisfying,โ€ said Ms Lloyd. โ€œWe are leaving a wonderful legacy.โ€

Opening night is open to everyone, including people who have never been to an art exhibition.

โ€œItโ€™s a chance to be inspired, see something new and perhaps discover a love of art you never knew you had,โ€ said Ms Lloyd.
