Highlands Hub partnership to boost business opportunities in Glen Innes

Local entrepreneurs and small businesses in Glen Innes will gain greater access to mentoring, training and industry connections through a new partnership between Glen Innes Severn Council and the University of New England (UNE).

The partnership will see the Glen Innes Highlands Hub join UNE’s SMART Region Incubator (SRI) network, connecting local businesses and emerging entrepreneurs with expertise and opportunities across the New England North West.

The initiative will allow business owners to access university researchers, industry professionals, workshops and networking opportunities without having to relocate from Glen Innes.

Glen Innes Severn Mayor Margot Davis said the partnership delivered on a longstanding priority for the Highlands Hub.

โ€œPartnerships are a key strategic pillar of the Highlands Hubโ€™s success. Connecting with incubators across the region has been part of that vision from the outset, so it is good to see this longstanding priority being delivered through our partnership with UNE SMART Region Incubator,โ€ Davis said.

โ€œThe Hubโ€™s success depends on more than providing a space. It is about connecting local businesses and entrepreneurs with the expertise, mentoring and networks that help them develop ideas and grow. This partnership strengthens those connections while allowing people to build their businesses here in Glen Innes.โ€

Under the agreement, local entrepreneurs will be able to access mentoring, business development programs, training workshops and connections with researchers and industry specialists.

UNE SRI also plans to host events, masterclasses and member gatherings at the Highlands Hub, subject to demand and availability.

The facility will continue operating as a local coworking, meeting and community space while providing a direct link to UNE’s broader innovation network.

UNE SMART Region Incubator Director Cameron Turner said the collaboration would help turn local ideas into practical opportunities.

โ€œRegional innovation works best when people, knowledge and opportunity are connected. What excites me about this partnership is the opportunity to unlock the knowledge and expertise within UNE, connect it with the ideas, businesses and people already doing great things in Glen Innes, and see what new opportunities emerge.โ€

โ€œUltimately, thatโ€™s what the SRI is here to do; help turn knowledge and ideas into practical impact that helps our communities thrive.โ€

The partnership could also lead to future collaborations involving business founder programs, research projects, regional initiatives and joint funding opportunities.

Council and UNE formally celebrated the agreement at the Highlands Hub on Tuesday, 13 October, as part of Council’s Rise & Thrive program for NSW Small Business Month 2026.

Davis said the initiative would help strengthen the local economy by supporting existing businesses and encouraging new ventures.

โ€œWe have talented people, strong businesses and good ideas in Glen Innes. Bringing incubator partnerships to life is central to the Highlands Hub delivering on its purpose. I look forward to seeing this partnership translate into practical programs, stronger business connections and opportunities for our community.โ€
